Ahead of its premiere, Disney+’s upcoming series Perfect Crown is already drawing attention, not just for its intriguing premise, but also for casting choices that have sparked debate online.

The series stars IU alongside Byun Woo Seok in a fictional alternate reality where Korea operates under a constitutional monarchy. IU plays Seong Hui Ju, a wealthy chaebol heiress frustrated by her lack of royal status, while Byun Woo Seok portrays a prince who holds a title but little real power.

Promotional buzz for the show began building earlier this month, with its first teaser released on March 10, followed by a second on March 18. While anticipation has been steadily rising, the latest teaser has also triggered a wave of criticism, particularly surrounding scenes depicting the characters in their younger years.

In one sequence, IU’s character is shown in a high school setting, running through a hallway alongside Noh Sang Hyun, both dressed in school uniforms. The clip quickly made its way onto social media platform X, where it prompted mixed reactions from viewers.

Many netizens expressed discomfort over visibly adult actors portraying teenage students, pointing to what they see as a recurring issue in K-dramas.

"Kinda getting tired of watching grown ass adults in school uniform. surely it can’t be that hard to cast young actors for such scenes.." wrote a viewer.

"Agreed… watch you and everything else cause even though the lead actresses look like babies themselves the drama have younger actresses for high school role," commented another.

"Atleast iu pulls it off somehow...but HIM??," remarked yet another viewer.

At the same time, others defended the casting choice, arguing that such scenes are brief flashbacks rather than the core setting of the drama. Some also highlighted industry realities, suggesting that using adult actors for school sequences can sometimes be a more practical, or even safer, approach.

"Who tf cares if it's some flashbacks lol, it's not like Friendly Rivalry where the grown ass adults are in high school uniform THE WHOLE TIME," commented a fan.

"Probably because a good amount of the series takes place in the royal academy. I don’t think those scenes are just mere flashbacks, and I also don’t think their characters were that young at that time," wrote another.

Yet another admirer wrote, "tbh i can't get too mad at stuff like this given the average quality of safeguards for child actors"

Despite the early controversy, Perfect Crown remains one of the most anticipated upcoming releases on Disney+, with its unique royal premise and star-studded cast driving interest. The series is set to premiere on April 10.
