The Ohio State University community is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Cailin Joyce. She was a cherished member of the OSU Club Dance Team, and her passing has caused great sadness among all who knew her.
Cailin was known for her bright spirit and deep passion for dance. She died after a tough battle with a rare blood disorder, a struggle she confronted with remarkable strength and grace.
The news was shared by her dance team in a moving Instagram post on 7 December. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that our beloved Cailin Joyce has passed away.
“Our team is heartbroken and mourning this loss,” they wrote, expressing the sadness felt throughout campus.
To her teammates, Cailin wasn’t just another dancer. She was the spark that uplifted the whole group.
They called her “the heartbeat of CDT,” adding, “She embodied everything that our team represented. She was kind, humble, determined, loyal and oh so funny. She danced with a fire behind her eyes and a passion that could move mountains… Everyone that crossed paths with Cailin knew that she was special.”
The team has now dedicated their season — and the future of their programme — to her memory. Their message was raw and full of love: “May all who know CDT know your impact… Thank you for changing our lives. Our forever friend, teammate and guardian angel. We know you are dancing full out in Heaven and we can’t wait to dance with you again one day.” They ended the tribute with a line from Wicked: “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”
A GoFundMe page created by a friend revealed the depth of the struggle Cailin endured. Treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, she went through “extensive monitoring, testing and treatment,” eventually learning she had a rare disorder connected to EBV, the mononucleosis virus.

Her condition brought physical limits that would break most people. The page described how treatment left her immune system fragile and her organs severely inflamed. Everyday activities — “hugging people, going outside, taking a hot shower and being around people” — became impossible. Even walking short distances felt overwhelming.
Yet through all of this, Cailin held onto her faith. The obituary shared, “She lived her Catholic faith and shared it with many… A saint among us, Cailin moved mountains with her fight and going ‘full out.’”
She was also a devoted younger sister to Sean, cheering him on from the stands whenever she could. “The purest soul… She is now a guardian angel to us,” the tribute read.
