The music world is mourning the loss of Sam Rivers, the longtime bassist, backing vocalist, and co-founding member of Limp Bizkit. Sam passed away at the age of 48. The band confirmed the news on Instagram, and described him as “a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human” whose “spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory.” While the cause of death has not been revealed, the musician’s past health struggles have resurfaced in light of the tragedy.
In their heartfelt tribute, Limp Bizkit wrote, “Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat. Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.”
The post featured a black-and-white image of Sam Rivers and was flooded with condolences from fans and fellow musicians. DJ Lethal, the band’s turntablist, commented on the post asking fans to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
Sam Rivers had been open about his health issues in the past. In Jon Wiederhorn’s book Raising Hell (Backstage Tales From the Lives of Metal Legends), the bassist revealed that he developed liver disease due to excessive drinking. “I got liver disease from excessive drinking,” he admitted in the book, detailing how his condition forced him to leave Limp Bizkit in 2015. His health deteriorated to the point that doctors warned him he would not survive unless he quit alcohol.
“It got so bad I had to go to UCLA Hospital,” Sam recalled. “The doctor said, ‘If you don’t stop, you’re going to die. And right now, you’re looking like you need a new liver.’” He eventually underwent a liver transplant in 2017, calling it “a perfect match,” and credited his recovery to quitting drinking and following his doctors’ guidance.

Sam Rivers rejoined Limp Bizkit in 2018, resuming his position as the band’s rhythmic backbone.
Born on September 2, 1977, in Jacksonville, Florida, Sam Rivers co-founded Limp Bizkit alongside Fred Durst in the early 1990s after the two met while working at a retail job. They initially performed together in a local band called Malachi Sage, which laid the foundation for Limp Bizkit’s formation in 1994.
The band went on to define the nu-metal era with hits such as “Nookie,” “Rollin’,” “My Way,” “Take a Look Around,” and “Behind Blue Eyes.” Known for his effortless bass grooves and stage presence, Sam Rivers helped craft the heavy yet melodic sound that catapulted the group to global fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
