Oscar-winning actor Kate Winslet made a rare red carpet appearance alongside her son Joe Anders at the premiere of her directorial debut, Goodbye June, a holiday season-set drama about a family coming together in the face of loss.

The mother-son duo attended the London premiere on December 3, with Winslet accompanied by her and ex-husband Sam Mendes’ 21-year-old son, Joe Anders.

Kate Winslet, who also stars in the film, directs from a screenplay written by her son Joe Anders. The story was partially inspired by their personal experience of losing Winslet's mother, Anders’ grandmother, to cancer in 2017.

Joe Anders, whose father is filmmaker Sam Mendes, wrote the script at the age of 19 and shared it with Kate Winslet for feedback.

For the red carpet outing, Kate wore a chic black dress cinched with a chunky gold belt, accessorizing with a sleek gold watch, necklace, and dangling earrings. Her hair was styled in a simple updo, with curled strands framing her face.

By her side, Joe complemented his mother in a black suit paired with a crisp white button-down shirt. He completed his look with a couple of rings and a silver wishbone necklace.

Speaking about her experience as a first-time director at the premiere, Kate said, "I just wanted to make a film that felt authentic and real."

She added, "I also didn't want to make a story that was about someone who dies because it's really not. It's actually about the life that is given to the people who are left behind." Kate further explained that she wanted to set the movie in Britain’s National Health Service space because it is "massively undervalued."

In the film, family matriarch June (Helen Mirren) is hospitalized shortly before Christmas. Her husband (Timothy Spall), son (Johnny Flynn), and three daughters, played by Winslet, Andrea Riseborough, and Toni Collette, along with their offspring, rush to her bedside, bringing with them conflicts and personal struggles, but also joy, care, and togetherness.
