Actor Hugh Jackman, who retired from his iconic role of Wolverine with the 2017 film Logan, is reportedly set to return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Fans have long wondered if the 57-year-old actor would ever reprise the role, and his recent statements suggest that the possibility is still open.
During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Hugh Jackman was asked if he would play Wolverine again. With a smile and a hint of mischief, he responded, “Maybe,” prompting a loud cheer from the studio audience. He then added, “I’m never saying ‘never’ ever again… I did mean it until the day I changed my mind. I did mean it for quite a few years.”
The actor also joked about the technological possibilities of his role, saying, “I have done ten films now, so I think they have enough for an AI version of me!” Hugh Jackman first appeared as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men, and reprised the role multiple times over the years, including in X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Logan (2017), and most recently in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
Many of Hugh Jackman’s former X-Men co-stars have already been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release in December 2026. These include Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
Earlier this year, rumors about Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine gained momentum when Marvel Studios released a surprising video in April. The video showed Hugh Jackman in character as Wolverine, not in battle, but simply breathing, sparking speculation about his possible comeback.
