Greta Lee's beloved character, Stella Bak, who debuted in season two of the Emmy-winning Apple TV series, has left The Morning Show.
Stella's AI gamble fails in the sixth episode of season four, "If Then," when the CEO of the media company at the centre of the show has a public breakdown that, according to showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, was long overdue.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s creator Charlotte reflected on writing the final episode for Lee and said, “I was interested in Stella as a person who grew up in tech, who always thought of tech as something like a superpower that could enhance her.”
She added, “What happens when tech becomes a way to look in the mirror and ask, who am I really? Am I on the right path?”
In the episode, the CEO leaves the media empire she had been so committed to rebuilding and hopes to meet Celine's husband at the airport for a getaway after Stella's affair with her new boss, Celine Dumont (played by Marion Cotillard) and her husband (Aaron Pierre) is revealed during a broken presentation about the company's new bet on AI.
In the end, however, Stella is abandoned at the airport and boards the aircraft by herself, her future unwritten.
Charlotte talks about the emotional moment of saying goodbye to Stella and said, “It was very emotional [filming her final scene]. Just thinking about it, I tear up. It was very hard to leave her, even though it was time for Stella to go rediscover some part of herself, and she couldn’t do that at UBN.”
She added, “She had to get on that plane by herself. When you really are at a crossroads, people can support you, but you can’t have a buddy. You have to have to figure it out by yourself.”
For the unversed, The Morning Show, which stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, examines the interpersonal and professional relationships of a morning news program crew.
As the president of UBA's news division, Lee's Stella Bak leads an online media company that serves Gen Z and millennial consumers.
