D’Angelo’s Journey: Remembering the voice that changed R&B forever

D'Angelo, who was born as Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, was surrounded by music from an early age. By the age of three, he was already playing the piano and giving church performances, and his father was a Pentecostal minister. His distinctive musical style was shaped by the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Sly and the Family Stone, but gospel music served as his foundation.

The album, which was produced with the help of the Soulquarians, a group that included Questlove, J Dilla, and Roy Hargrove, became a cultural icon. His artistry was on display in songs like Devil's Pie and Untitled (How Does It Feel), but he later acknowledged that the sultry music video for Untitled made him feel uncomfortable by making him into an unwanted sex symbol.  Despite Voodoo's two Grammy victories, D'Angelo withdrew from the limelight due to the extreme pressure of celebrity.

Silence prevailed for the next ten years. D'Angelo struggled behind the scenes with substance abuse, legal troubles, and the emotional toll that comes with being famous. He turned into a recluse who was seldom seen in public. Fans questioned whether he would ever play music again.

With Black Messiah, D'Angelo made an incredible return in 2014 after almost 15 years. The album, which combined funk, soul, and social commentary, was both musically audacious and politically charged. It demonstrated how his art had changed, becoming more profound, reflective, and current than before. His status as one of the most significant voices in R&B history was confirmed when the album was acclaimed as a masterpiece.
