Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt were among the most talked-about couples in Hollywood during the '90s.
According to biographer Amy Odell in Gwyneth: The Biography, Pitt even implied that Paltrow would be the ideal on-screen match for him when they first started dating in 1993 on the sets of Se7en.
Sparks flew as they spent more time together, and they soon became the most adored couple in Hollywood.
The pair got engaged in 1996, but despite their seemingly perfect relationship, Paltrow reportedly had reservations early on.
In 1997, their relationship came to an end. According to Odell, Paltrow was extremely irritated when he found out that Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. She allegedly told a friend that she was upset and even used derogatory language about Pitt.
She also felt that she was intellectually superior, more well-educated, and carried a greater sense of sophistication. "She thought she was smarter, better educated, and more sophisticated," Amy said, expressing how Gwyneth felt about Brad Pitt.
The biography also discusses how their disparate upbringings—Patrow was raised in Manhattan and attended the prestigious Spence School, while Pitt came from a deeply religious family in Missouri—may have played a role in their breakup.
The author claims that because of this cultural difference, Paltrow felt more sophisticated and knowledgeable than Pitt.
Brad Pitt went on to marry Aniston in 2000, though the two divorced in 2005. He later married Angelina Jolie, with whom he shares six children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce in December 2024.
