After years of anticipation, Beyoncé has finally won the Album of the Year (AOTY) award at the 67th Grammy Awards for Cowboy Carter, marking a historic moment in her career.
The win comes after four previous nominations in the category, where many fans and critics believed she had been snubbed in favour of other artists.
Beyoncé, who holds the record as the most awarded and nominated artist in Grammys history, took the stage at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, visibly emotional as she accepted the long-overdue honour. The award was presented by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, whom Beyoncé thanked at the beginning of her speech for their efforts in combating the recent wildfires in the city.
"It’s been many, many years," Beyoncé began, acknowledging the long wait for her first Album of the Year victory. “I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, all of the hard work.”
She dedicated her win to Linda Martell, a pioneering Black country singer who became the first Black woman to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Martell is also featured on Cowboy Carter, serving as a crucial inspiration for Beyoncé’s genre-defying country album.
“I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors,” Beyoncé said.
Beyoncé’s previous losses in the Album of the Year category have been widely debated. She was previously nominated for I Am… Sasha Fierce (2010), Beyoncé (2015), Lemonade (2017), and Renaissance (2023), but each time, another artist took home the top prize.
Host Trevor Noah summed up the moment perfectly, saying, “We finally saw it happen, everyone.”
The 2025 Grammys was a landmark event, with women dominating the night’s top categories. Alongside Beyoncé’s AOTY win, Kendrick Lamar swept the night with five Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his explosive Drake diss track, Not Like Us.
