Game of Thrones spinoff ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ will premiere on HBO Max in January 2026, as confirmed by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content.
In a conversation with Variety, Bloys revealed January as the release window for the much-awaited series, which is based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
The story serves as a prequel to Game of Thrones, set about 90 years before the events of the main saga.
Speaking about the show, American author, television writer, and television producer George R. R. Martin said, “I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them," Martin had earlier said in a blog post in January. "Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.”
Fans have been eagerly waiting for an update about the show from the makers since last year. The makers confirmed in 2024 that actors Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell have been locked in as Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg, respectively.
HBO shared a glimpse from the show in June 2024, followed by a teaser video featuring the leads characters in the spinoff as well as some of the previous familiar faces in the Game of Thrones franchise.
The six-part series, inspired by George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, will feature Peter Claffey in the role of Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as the young Aegon V Targaryen, better known as Egg.

The story takes place around 90 to 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during a time when the Targaryen dynasty still ruled the Seven Kingdoms.
The official synopsis of the show read as, "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."
