Former child actor Sophie Nyweide, known for roles in Mammoth and Noah, dies at 24

Sophie Nyweide, an actress who was most famous for playing a child in the 2009 movie Mammoth, sadly died at the age of 24. In an obituary, her family confirmed the devastating news, stating that she passed away on April 14.

Nyweide's mother, actress Shelly Gibson, confirmed the news to TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, but the cause of her death has not been made public. Gibson revealed that a police investigation is presently in progress and that Sophie died in Bennington, Vermont.

Speaking to TMZ about her daughter's death and possible cause of her demise, Shelly further said, "My knowledge is she was using drugs and was a tiny young woman. She was with other people when she died. I didn't know them. There is an investigation ongoing. The autopsy results are not in. They said it would take 6-8 weeks. So I can't say definitively.”

Nyweide's obituary stated, "Sophie. A life ended too soon. May it not be in vain....May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better. Yes, we must all protect our children and do better."

"Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her, are heartbroken their efforts couldn't save her from her fate. She self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death. She repeatedly said she would 'handle it' on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life," the obituary continued.

By the time she was just 10 years old, Sophie Nyweide had already built an impressive resume, appearing in at least seven films. Her early career included roles in Noah, Bella, Margot at the Wedding, and Shadows & Lies, showcasing her range and talent even at a young age. In addition to her film work, she also made appearances on television, with credits in popular shows like Law & Order and What Would You Do?.
