Hansal mehta praises today's actresses

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta recently sparked a discussion around gender representation in Hindi cinema with his insightful post on X (formerly Twitter), where he highlighted the need for fresh talent in the industry.

After his previous post addressed the rise of emerging male actors and the necessity of bolder casting choices, there was a quick outcry questioning the absence of female actors in his list. Hansal, in response, clarified that his intention was never to downplay women’s roles but to underscore the importance of recognising actors who bring authenticity and depth to their performances.

In his latest post, Mehta pointed out that women in Hindi cinema deserve not only more recognition but also better roles. He stressed that his list of standout female actors wasn't based on commercial success or social media clout, but rather on craft, presence, and the ability to challenge an industry that often prioritises glamour over substance.

"This isn’t about box office numbers, social media engagement, or PR-driven stardom. This is about craft, presence, and the ability to break through a system that still prioritises glamour over substance," Mehta wrote.

Hansal went on to praise several actors, naming Bulbbul and Qala star Triptii Dimri for her compelling performances. He acknowledged her unique presence and ability to command attention, even in larger productions like Animal. “She has the presence and gravitas to carry a film,” Hansal said, adding, "What she needs now is opportunity, and filmmakers who stand by her without succumbing to their male star dependence."

Mehta also praised Sharvari for her effortless screen presence and potential to become a major star, alongside Ananya Panday, who has showcased depth in projects like Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan and CTRL.

Mehta's post also highlighted the larger issue of female-driven stories in cinema. While recognising the exceptional work of veterans like Tabu, Vidya Balan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, he pointed out that these actresses rarely receive as many compelling scripts as their male counterparts. "The larger problem remains—where are the stories that put women at the center?" he questioned, stressing the outdated mentality that still questions the box-office viability of female-led films.

This conversation, spearheaded by Hansal Mehta, is an important step toward a more inclusive and progressive future for Hindi cinema.
