Veteran actor Apara Mehta, known for her remarkable contributions to television, theatre, and films, recently spoke about her latest project and the evolving landscape of entertainment. In an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol.com, she delved into her character in the upcoming project Oops Ab Kya, the changes she has witnessed in the industry, and her approach to new opportunities.
Talking about her latest role, Apara described it as one with depth and complexity. “This character is traditional and conventional, but she moves with time. It is a very layered role, and I enjoyed playing it,” she shared. She believes that every role she takes on brings a new experience, and this one is no different.
With decades of experience across theatre, television, films, and now OTT platforms, Apara has seamlessly transitioned through different formats of storytelling. “I always say that I have never left the theatre. Theatre, film, TV, and now OTT—each has its own uniqueness. I am open to learning new things, and I’ve learned a lot from the younger generation, including directors and writers,” she said.
Despite her extensive experience, Apara remains humble and eager to learn. She shared how she constantly seeks feedback from younger directors and co-actors. “I ask them, ‘Am I doing it right? Is this what you want?’ Some say, ‘Do more than that,’ or ‘Do less than that,’ and I try to adapt. It is different, it is challenging, and it is a new learning experience for me,” she expressed.

When asked if there was ever a role she regretted taking on, Apara reflected on her professional approach. “As a professional actor, I have to compartmentalize my personal preferences from my work. Once I say yes to something, I give it my best. Thankfully, I haven’t come across a role I didn’t want to do,” she stated. She also expressed her love for comedy, mentioning, “I really enjoy comedy. Don’t tell me about it! I think it’s a very refined form of acting. Classy comedy is a pleasure to perform.”
Apara emphasized the importance of staying open to new ideas and changes in the industry. “I learn from youngsters. Whether it’s technology, acting, or even doing Zoom meetings, I always keep an open mind,” she said. She also recalled working with many young actors who later became industry stalwarts. “There are so many lead actors today who faced the camera for the first time with me. I don’t judge anyone, and I never give unsolicited advice. If you’re not open to learning, you become rigid, and that’s not who I am.”

Reminiscing about one of her film experiences, she shared a memorable anecdote from her time working in a 1999 film directed by Neeraj Vora. “In Gujarati theatre, people often say, ‘Just go and do the scene; it’s that easy.’ So, when Neeraj asked me, I agreed. But after reading the script, I told my husband, ‘I don’t think I can do this call girl role.’ He reminded me that I had already committed to it. On the day of the shoot, Salman Khan was initially not in the mood to shoot, but when he learned a theatre actor was involved, he agreed. It was a relief! Wahi same time par Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi happened in my life and my colleague who went to watch the film told me ki sab keh rhe the ki Tulsi ki saans dekho kya kaam karr rhi hai, (she laughed). Main gayi bhi nahi wo film dekhne kyu ki Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi was airing at the same time."
She also recalled how filmmaker Farah Khan noticed her work and offered her a role in Devdas. “Farah told me, ‘I am making a film called Devdas, and I feel you fit a role perfectly. It’s a small part, but I don’t need to ask you anything. Just do what the director wants.’ That’s exactly what I did,” she recounted.
