As Hindi party anthems such as ‘Abhi toh party shuru huyi hai’ (Khoobsurat, 2014) and ‘Dj Waley Babu’ turn 10 years old, the female voice behind these, Punjabi pop singer Aastha Gill, has just dropped her new single ‘Nazar’, her take on the UK-Punjabi vibe from the 2000s, composed by Hiten. In the music video, Aastha Gill grooves with actor Suhail Nayyar at a masquerade party. She has more songs in her kitty this year. In an exclusive interview, Gill tells Moneycontrol’s Tanushree Ghosh about the making of the song, her move from Delhi to Mumbai for work, her experience in Bollywood, idolising Sunidhi Chauhan, what Badshah told her about going solo, and whether female Punjabi singers also get threats from criminal gangs like their male counterparts.
