Twenty-five years after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi first graced Indian television and became a cultural phenomenon, Ektaa R Kapoor has finally opened up about why she chose to reboot the show. In a heartfelt social media note titled “Why Kyunki, Why Now?”, the television czarina shared her vision behind the revival, emphasizing the need for change, meaningful storytelling, and women’s voices.
Ektaa Kapoor addressed both nostalgia and criticism in her statement. "I said, 'Let's do this! Let's create a show that's not afraid to raise important questions, that sparks conversations, and stands out in a time dominated by visual gimmicks,'" she wrote, firmly defending her decision to bring Kyunki back in a modern format.
The new version, she revealed, will not be an endless daily soap but a limited episode series. “'Kyunki' is coming back with limited episodes, to celebrate 25 years with an intent to impact, entertain, probe thoughts and, most importantly, to inspire,” she stated. “With a lot of entertainment, excitement and heartfelt emotions.”
Ektaa Kapoor’s note came amid backlash from a section of audiences and critics, notably an article by IndiaToday.in titled “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is back, but who asked for it?” The piece questioned the relevance of reviving a show that once glorified the domestication of women, especially in an era where viewers are consuming globally progressive content online.

Taking the criticism head-on, Ektaa Kapoor acknowledged that even she was hesitant at first. But she believes the reboot has the potential to redefine what Kyunki stands for today. “Here's to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi – to what it stands for, giving a voice, bringing a much-awaited change, to its history and for what it holds in store for us,” she wrote. “Of course, without sounding preachy but being relatable and inclusive.”
She emphasized that the storytelling this time will have a clear purpose: “The fight though, is not about winning. It is about Impact! To the show that's not just ours, but also yours too.”
Smriti Irani reprises her iconic role as Tulsi Virani, while Amar Upadhyay, Apara Mehta, Shakti Anand, and Komolika Guha Thakurta return in their beloved characters. Kapoor promised fans an evolved version of the show that respects its legacy but moves forward with a progressive intent.
Ektaa Kapoor concluded her message by reminding viewers of the timeless power of stories: “Cheers to Kyunki, cheers to the power of storytelling, cheers to less of what happened before and cheers to what will come!”
The reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi premieres on Star Plus on July 29 at 10:30 pm, with a promise to stir conversations, entertain families, and—most importantly—bring meaningful change to the screen.
