  • Ranveer Singh's grandmother Chand Burke was a noted film actress
  • Chand Burke acted in Hindi, Punjabi films pre- and post-Partition
  • Ranveer's family also has diplomatic and academic connections

Ranveer Singh’s journey in Bollywood is often seen as an outsider success story, but here’s the thing, his roots do have a quiet connection to cinema history. While he built his career on his own terms, his family background reveals an interesting link to the film industry that many people still don’t know about.

The actor’s paternal grandmother, Chand Burke, was a well-known name in Hindi and Punjabi cinema during her time. She was fondly called the Dancing Lily of the Punjab, a title that reflected both her screen presence and popularity. Long before Ranveer became a star, Chand Burke had already carved her own identity in films.

Her journey began in Lahore, where she acted in several films before the Partition of India. After relocating to Bombay, she continued her work in cinema and eventually got a significant break in Boot Polish, a film produced by the legendary Raj Kapoor. That project helped her gain recognition in mainstream Hindi cinema.

Chand Burke’s personal life also saw its share of changes. She was initially married to writer-director Niranjan, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1954. A year later, she married businessman Sundar Singh Bhavnani. Together, they had two children, Tonya and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, who is Ranveer Singh’s father.

This lineage places Ranveer in a unique space. He is not a typical industry insider who grew up surrounded by film sets and active connections, but he is also not entirely disconnected from Bollywood’s past. His grandmother’s legacy exists, even if it wasn’t a direct launchpad for his career.

Interestingly, Chand Burke’s family had influence beyond cinema as well. Her brother, Samuel Martin Burke, served as an Indian Civil Service officer and later became a diplomat representing Pakistan in Scandinavian countries. He also went on to teach at the University of Minnesota, adding an academic and diplomatic dimension to the family’s history.

What this really means is that Ranveer Singh’s success is still very much self-made. His rise, from auditioning for roles to becoming one of the most bankable stars today, stands on his own effort and choices. But at the same time, there’s a fascinating legacy behind him, one that quietly connects him to an earlier era of Indian cinema.
