Why did Deepika Padukone exit from Kalki AD 2?

Deepika Padukone’s sudden exit from the much-awaited sequel to Kalki 2898 AD caught many by surprise and has sparked quite a conversation in Bollywood.

India Today reported, she was originally cast in a key role as Sumathi (SUM-80), but a recent change in the script apparently shrunk her part to a brief cameo. Naturally, this left Deepika and her team quite taken aback, especially since they had been gearing up to start shooting with high hopes.

On 18 September, the film’s producers took to social media to announce that Deepika would no longer be part of the project.

They emphasised that a film of this scale requires complete commitment, and regretted that they couldn’t find common ground to move forward together. They also wished her all the best for her upcoming work, but made it clear that such a massive project demands full dedication.

There have been whispers about the reasons behind the split. Reports suggest that Deepika had some requests—like fixed working hours, a 25% pay raise, and accommodation for her team.

While this kind of negotiation is quite common for leading actors, it seems the makers felt these terms, combined with the downsizing of her role, made it difficult to continue their collaboration.

This isn’t the first time Deepika’s professional decisions have raised eyebrows. Earlier this year, she stepped away from Spirit, a film by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, which also led to rumours of disagreements, especially as she’s been balancing her return to work after motherhood.

Fans and insiders have mixed feelings. Many recognise that she needs a work-life balance, particularly as she juggles the responsibilities of being a well-known actress and a new mother.

Others contend that stars in big-budget films like Kalki must give their all under all conditions.

Ultimately, producing a major motion picture is a complicated process that requires the cooperation of all parties involved—creative, personal, and professional. Now that Deepika has left, everyone is watching to see how the creators will change the plot and proceed without her
