Coldplay's highly anticipated return to India after nine years began with a bang at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, but the crowd's response left fans and netizens divided. Despite Chris Martin and the band’s spirited performances, many online expressed disappointment at the audience’s lack of enthusiasm during the event.
Videos from the concert, particularly of the band performing their iconic track Hymn for the Weekend, went viral on social media. Fans noticed that the audience barely sang along or cheered, prompting reactions like “Quieter than a library” and “a really cold play.”
Many attributed the subdued energy to ticket pricing that “priced out real fans,” leaving the event filled with influencers and attendees focused more on creating social media content than enjoying the music.
Nahh man... WHAT IS THIS???? The crowd is quieter than a fxcking library... L!#Coldplay pic.twitter.com/F4AnvrIXaK

“More than half of them are just there for Insta reels & pics,” one user commented. “How can you not know Hymn for the Weekend? It was literally shot in Mumbai!” another pointed out. Some joked that people were busy looking up lyrics instead of participating.
Despite the audience's lukewarm energy, Chris Martin delivered memorable moments. He paused the performance to give a shoutout to cricketer Jasprit Bumrah, saying, “He needs to bowl,” and charmed the crowd by saying Jai Shri Ram after noticing a fan’s poster. Martin also invited a fan on stage for an impromptu duet.
The concert had generated immense buzz, with over a million fans attempting to book tickets online. However, exorbitant resale prices—reaching up to Rs 1.5 lakh—sparked debates about accessibility for genuine fans.
The band will perform two more shows at DY Patil Stadium on January 19 and 21 before heading to Ahmedabad for back-to-back performances on January 25 and 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
