Fans of BTS had a pleasant surprise this week as member Kim Taehyung, popularly known as V, officially joined TikTok, instantly sending excitement across the fandom.
The singer launched his account on March 13 under the username @tete_kimv, and it did not take long for fans to find him.
Within just a few hours, the account had already attracted so many followers and the same evening, that number had crossed one million — a clear sign of the immense global following Kim Taehyung enjoys.
The moment quickly became a trending topic among ARMY, the devoted fanbase of BTS.
Two of the first people to follow the account were fellow BTS members Jung Ho-seok and Jeon Jungkook, who until now had been the only members of the group active on TikTok.
The moment they followed him on social media, fans wanted to see what clues they could find to help confirm if this account actually belonged to BTS' V.
What made the discovery even more entertaining was the way fans figured it out.
Part of what makes the process of finding these joins fun for the fans is the different ways in which fans figured this out.
The day before the account appeared, on March 12, Jungkook had quietly unfollowed almost everyone on his own TikTok profile, leaving only J-Hope and the official BTS account on his following list.
When fans checked again the next day and noticed a brand new account on that list, they quickly connected the dots.
The clever detective work sparked plenty of humour online. One fan summed up the situation perfectly, writing: "I'm still thinking how we found out about Taehyung's TikTok account from Jungkook and Jungkook's Instagram account from Taehyung."
The timing of V’s arrival on TikTok has also raised excitement about what fans might see next. In a recent interview with GQ, Kim Taehyung and Jeon Jungkook had spoken about the idea of doing TikTok challenges together after a fan brought it up.
Now that both artists are active on the platform, many fans believe those fun collaborations could happen sooner rather than later.
The launch also comes at a significant moment for BTS as the group prepares for its long-awaited comeback with their upcoming album Arirang, which is set to release on March 20.
A day after the album drops, the group will hold a large live performance at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on March 21. The event will be streamed on Netflix in the whole world.
