In a development that has sparked widespread curiosity across the industry, filmmaker Aditya Dhar and Jio Studios have officially decided to release Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh, in two parts.
According to an industry source quoted by Bollywood Hungama, the choice was not pre-planned but stemmed from what unfolded during the shoot. Contrary to assumptions that Dhurandhar was conceptualised as a two-part franchise, the source clarified that it was originally “always planned as a one-part film.” But Aditya Dhar, inspired by the material and the potential of the world he was building, ended up filming far more than what was scripted.
“He thought that he would wrap up the entire film in one part, as all films have the journey of improvisation on the set. However, when he watched the entire footage, it was becoming difficult to wrap up all the conflict in a single film,” the source said.
The decision to split the film was taken only after the full footage was reviewed during editing. “It's a film which organically transformed into a two-parter based on the demand of the story. It was in the first week of October that Aditya Dhar and Jio Studios decided to split the film into two parts, as a film of this scale warranted showcasing in the longer format,” the source added.
They further explained, “The film was not designed as a two-parter, but destined to be a two-parter. Both the films will have a proper start, middle and end as every beat of the story is a climax in itself, bringing in an adrenaline rush.”
What seemed like a challenge ended up becoming a creative advantage. A one-part format, insiders believe, would have felt “like a rushed job,” especially with so many characters and story arcs. The makers are now confident that the first instalment will set the stage strongly, while the sequel will “deliver 2x the violence and edge-of-the-seat moments.”
Along with Ranveer Singh, Dhurandhar features Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal in key roles.
