There are countless love stories in Bollywood, but few are as endearing and enduring as that of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan. Decades after their marriage, the couple continues to charm fans with their genuine chemistry, shared humor, and little glimpses of their everyday life that feel both relatable and iconic. One such delightful moment dates back to a throwback interview where Shah Rukh revealed how Gauri once swapped his T-shirt for something far more glamorous, a handbag.
During a candid chat with filmmaker Farah Khan, the conversation turned toward Shah Rukh’s famously generous nature as a husband. Farah, teasing him, said in Hindi, “I know you are a very generous husband, and you’ve given many gifts to your wife, Gauri.”
That’s when SRK dropped a hilarious truth bomb. Laughing, he confessed, “Whenever I have gifted something to Gauri, she has accepted it normally, but 99.9% of the time, she has returned it and bought something else instead.” The audience burst into laughter, and so did Farah, who pressed him for details. What followed was a story that perfectly captured Gauri’s personality and the playful dynamic that has kept their marriage so refreshing.
Shah Rukh recalled an incident from years ago when he was in London for nearly two months undergoing treatment for a spine injury. Since his stay was longer than expected, he decided to buy himself a new T-shirt. But as luck would have it, the shirt didn’t fit him right — it was too large. So, he decided to return it. He asked Gauri to go to the store and exchange it for a cotton one instead.
Farah jumped in, recalling, “So Shah Rukh asked Gauri to return that T-shirt.” SRK continued, explaining that Gauri later told him the store had refused to take it back. The story could have ended there, but as it turned out, there was a funny twist waiting to be revealed.
A few days later, when their friends Pamila and Kajal visited him, they couldn’t keep the secret any longer. “We have friends Pamila and Kajal. They came to meet me and said they would not be able to lie,” SRK shared, his eyes twinkling. “They were like, ‘Unhone tumhare liye kuch nahi liya, unhone kaha yeh toh hospital mein hai, usse kya naye kapde ki zaroorat hai, toh uske jagah unhone handbag le liya.’”
Translation: “She didn’t buy anything for you. She said, ‘He’s in the hospital, he doesn’t need new clothes,’ so she bought herself a handbag instead.”
Over the years, both Shah Rukh and Gauri have spoken about the balance in their marriage — her calm practicality against his dramatic energy, her grounded nature balancing his larger-than-life persona. This story fits that picture perfectly: Gauri, confident enough to do what she pleases, and Shah Rukh, amused enough to love her all the more for it.
The couple, who tied the knot on October 25, 1991, have stood the test of time and fame. Together, they’ve raised three children, Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam and built a life that feels as much about partnership as it is about love.
