Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer dies at 68 after long battle with cancer

Actor Pankaj Dheer passed away on 15 October 2025 after fighting cancer at the age of 68, according to confirmation by his acquaintance Amit Behl. Dheer had apparently been unwell for some time. He had battled cancer previously, underwent major surgery, but the illness had relapsed in recent months.

The Cine & TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) released an official statement on Tuesday, sharing the news with deep sorrow. The statement noted that Dheer had served as the association’s former Hon. General Secretary and had been a chairman of its trust. Cremation has been scheduled for the same day, 15 October, in Mumbai’s Vile Parle (W) area.

Dheer is known for his portrayal of Karna in the 1988 TV adaptation of the epic Mahabharat by B.R. Chopra, a role that made him a household name. His performance became iconic; images of him in that role were used for reference in textbooks, and statues of Karna based on his portrayal are even worshipped in some temples.

Beyond that landmark role, Dheer had a long career in television and cinema, playing diverse characters in courtroom dramas, historical sagas, and mythological shows. He also founded an acting academy and a production studio, helping train future actors.

Friends, colleagues and fans are in mourning. Many remember his determination, humility, and generosity behind the the scenes, not just his on-screen presence. In confronting illness again and again, he showed resilience.
