Shefali Shah, who returns as the fearless DCP Vartika Chaturvedi in Delhi Crime 3, has spoken candidly about women’s safety, social awareness, and the need for collective responsibility. Speaking to Zoom, Shefali reflected on why safety must begin with awareness and why change must start at home.
Shefali stressed the importance of vigilance in everyday life. “As a woman, you have to be aware of what’s going on. You have to keep your antennas up. Yes, it is terrible, but it is my responsibility to be safe. It is sad that I can’t trust anyone with it,” she said.
Drawing from personal experience, Shefali added that every woman has faced some form of harassment. “Every woman has gone through a situation, exploitation, been touched inappropriately or been cat-called; the extent of it varies. But if I see an actor on set or a flight feeling uncomfortable, I don’t stop myself from going and asking if she’s okay. This is everyone’s responsibility,” she shared.
Shefali, who has always used her voice to highlight social issues through her work, believes that the problem must be addressed at its root, by raising boys right. “How women are treated is despicable. I agree that men need to keep their eyes open because not all men are perpetrators. In an ideal world, why are we adjusting according to what happens rather than saying this shouldn’t happen at all?” she said. “I do believe that our girls will be safe if our sons are raised right, but that’s not going to happen tomorrow; it’s a long, long way to go.”
The new season of Delhi Crime streams on Netflix today and also stars Huma Qureshi, Rasika Dugal, Sayani Gupta, and Rajesh Tailang.
