Kolkata is buzzing with an excitement the city hasn’t experienced in years.

Streets, fan clubs, and football cafés are alive with chatter, all because Lionel Messi — the man many consider the greatest ever to grace the pitch — is finally returning to India after 14 long years.

And as if that weren’t thrilling enough, there’s an extra spark in the air with reports suggesting that Shah Rukh Khan may share the stage with him in Kolkata.

For many fans, Messi’s last visit in 2011 feels like a cherished memory tucked away but never forgotten. That night at Salt Lake Stadium, when he led Argentina against Venezuela, is still fresh in the memories of those who were lucky enough to see it.

Now, as the 2025 GOAT Tour of India begins, Kolkata once again serves as the first stop on what promises to be an unforgettable journey.

Messi is expected to land in the city in the early hours of 13 December — around 1 a.m. — but the late-night arrival has done nothing to dampen the enthusiasm. His day will begin almost immediately with a sponsors’ event, after which he will head to Salt Lake Stadium for a grand musical tribute organised in his honour. The celebrations won’t stop at the music: Mohun Bagan and Diamond Harbour will take the field for a short exhibition game, and there’s hopeful murmuring that Messi might treat fans to a few shots himself.

As per Millenium Post, the icing on the cake could be a special appearance by Shah Rukh Khan, if schedules align. The idea of the two global icons sharing a stage has already sent fans into a frenzy.

The evening is also expected to see the presence of West Bengal’s most prominent figures, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, and sports legends Sourav Ganguly and Leander Paes.

There’s even more in store: plans are underway to unveil a towering 70-foot statue of Messi in Lake Town. Whether the football star will inaugurate it in person or through a digital link-up from the stadium is still being finalised, but anticipation is running high.
