Indian classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away on October 2 due to age-related issues. He was 89.
The veteran singer took his last breath at his daughter’s house in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur. He was admitted to the hospital for the last few days due to health-related ailments.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra’s daughter Namrata Mishra told PTI, “He was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age related issues. He passed away at home this morning at around 4 am.”
The last rites of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm.
Veteran singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was a classical singer from Banaras who was a representative of the Banaras gharana (school) of Hindustani classical music, particularly the Khayal and the 'Purab Ang' - Thumri.
He had received multiple awards and accolades throughout his decades of career. He has received the 'Shiromani Award' from Sur Singar Sansad, Bombay; the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; and the Government of India's Sangeet Natak Academy fellowship.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra had sung several classical songs. He had also sung the Aarakshan (2011) song Kaun Si Dor with Shreya Ghoshal and Saans Albeli. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles. He had also sung the title track of Sunny Deol’s 2018 drama satire, Mohalla Assi.
The veteran singer had also received India's third-highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan. In 2020, he received India's second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters.
