Mira Nair reveals she once wanted her son and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani instead of Ishaan Kahtter for 'A Suitable Boy'

The award-winning director, Mira Nair opened up about an intimate and surprising chapter from years ago — the time she tried to cast her son, Zohran Mamdani, in the lead role of A Suitable Boy.

Today, of course, Zohran Mamdani is known not for acting, but for making history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Mira Nair recalled that she truly believed he could have been her “suitable boy.”

She shared, "I literally offered him the role of the suitable boy - the main role in A Suitable Boy… And he didn't. He said, 'A lot of people die to be offered these things, but I don't.' He was the most reluctant actor. He never wanted it, and I had to accept that."

It wasn’t said with regret; instead, there was a sense of admiration for her son’s clarity and groundedness. Mira Nair reflected warmly, "And I was also grateful, because he knew he didn't need it - that need people have to be an actor - he didn't have that. But he's got the goods… the charisma… the ability he has to actually make joy."

She went on to describe the handful of times she did manage to sneak him into her work. "We threw a shirt on him for Queen of Katwe… but yes, there is a shot where he plays a kid in that film, briefly." She laughed that those days are most likely behind them now. "I've got no chance… He never wanted to, but I'd love it if he did. I'd love it."

What touched her most, however, was seeing how the world he grew up in — one filled with poetry, cinema, music and movement between continents — shaped the leader he became. "It's a portrait of our lives, really… We live actively between three continents… At home we've always spoken Hindustani… our home has always been filled with music."

A Suitable Boy featured Tanya Maniktala, Ishaan Khatter, Namit Das and Shahana Goswami in key roles, but the “suitable boy” Mira Nair once envisioned had already found his own path.
