Music director Lalit Pandit, of the hit Jatin-Lalit duo, has offered a fascinating new anecdote about one of Bollywood’s most memorable item songs, Munni Badnaam Hui from the 2010 film Dabangg.

He revealed that Salman Khan’s iconic dance moves in the hit song that also featured Malaika Arora, were inspired by real-life moments with his own driver and cook.

Speaking to ANI, Lalit Pandit recounted how, during the song’s recording, Salman invited his driver, his cook, and local friends to his farmhouse for a bonfire and celebration. As everyone danced around the fire — including his driver and cook — Salman watched and picked up their natural, joyous steps.

“Munni Badnaam mei Salman ne kya masti wala dance kiya tha...Jab woh gaana record hua tha, he took his driver, his cook, and everybody to his farmhouse. Salman is a very friendly guy. He has got his own character. Woh hamesha masti mei rehte hai. Raat mei unhone bonfire jalaya aur in sabko bola nachne ke liye. Aur sabko ko thoda thoda pila diya. Driver bhi nach raha tha, cook bhi, and waha ke locals bhi. He noticed and unke steps hi kiye hai. Gaane mei haath upar karke nache hai woh unke driver ka step hai," the music director said.

Originally, Munni Badnaam Hui was meant to be filmed only with a female performer, Malaika Arora, whose on-screen energy helped make the track unforgettable.

But according to Lalit, Salman was eager to be a part of the song, insisting that his own cameo was “necessary” for the song to become a hit.

"He added so much to the song. He was the one to bring himself as an addition to the song. Munni Badnaam was originally a female song but then he said ‘Isme mera hona zaruri hai warna gaana hit nahi hoga (I should be in the song or else it won’t be a hit).' It was then when we added another antara (part). Salman even suggested the action portions when he raids the place, turning the situation into a comedy sequence," he added.

The song, which was sung  by Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya Nigam, and choreographed by Farah Khan, went on to become a cultural phenomenon after Dabangg was released. It also contributed significantly to the film’s blockbuster success.
