Veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu has moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights — including his name, image, voice, and distinctive singing style.
The petition, filed through advocates Shikha Sachdeva and Sana Raees Khan, urged the court to stop individuals or organizations from using or imitating Sanu’s persona, voice, or likeness without his permission. It specifically asked for a ban on the unauthorized use or imitation of his “voice, vocal techniques, interpretations, images, caricatures, photographs, and signature,” claiming that such acts violate his artistic and moral rights.
According to Bar and Bench, the Delhi High Court has now granted an interim injunction in Sanu’s favor, protecting his personality rights. Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora has prohibited the misuse of Kumar Sanu’s name, image, voice, likeness, or any aspect of his persona for commercial gain until the next hearing, scheduled for March 30, 2026.
Following the court’s decision, Kumar Sanu expressed his gratitude on Instagram with a photo alongside his lawyer, Sana Raees Khan. He wrote, “I am deeply grateful to my advocate, Sana Raees Khan, for her powerful and masterful arguments that led to this significant victory in court. My heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Delhi High Court for recognizing and upholding my Personality Rights.”
He further added, “This landmark judgment is not just a personal win, but a strong precedent in safeguarding every artist’s identity, voice, and creative expression.”
According to the plea, Kumar Sanu's identity has been misused by several third parties in ways that could deceive the public and damage his reputation. It further stated that such acts violate the moral rights guaranteed by the Copyright Act and weaken his creative legacy.
According to the filing, Kumar Sanu's creative identity has been violated by AI-generated audios, GIFs, and videos that mimic his voice and persona which have been circulating online. Some of these videos even make fun of him.
Artists are becoming increasingly concerned about unapproved digital reproductions, which is reflected in Kumar Sanu's legal action. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Karan Johar are among the celebrities who have applied for similar legal protection in recent months to protect their image and likeness in the era of deepfakes and artificial intelligence.
