Veteran actor and public intellectual Kamal Haasan has warmly congratulated the Dalai Lama on his remarkable achievement at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, where the 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader won his first Grammy in the Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording category for the spoken-word album Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
In a social media post, Kamal Haasan wrote, “Proud to see one of the world’s thought leaders, Joining the venerable league of Artistes. Yes. Words can add more meaning to music of this world. Congrats Grammy. Congrats Amjad Ali Khan sahab.”
The Dalai Lama’s win marks a unique moment in Grammy history — a spiritual figure joining the ranks of globally recognised artists and storytellers. The album features the Dalai Lama’s meditative insights on compassion, peace and human unity, set against a musical backdrop that includes contributions from maestros like Amjad Ali Khan and his sons.
The Tibetan leader’s acceptance of the award, conveyed through collaborators at the ceremony in Los Angeles, was humble and reflective. In statements shared by his office, the Dalai Lama said he viewed the Grammy not as a personal triumph but as “a recognition of shared universal responsibility” — a sentiment that aligns with his decades-long advocacy for peace, interconnectedness, and mindfulness.
The award was accepted on his behalf by collaborator Rufus Wainwright, who acknowledged the privilege of representing the project at the ceremony. In response to the honour, the Dalai Lama said he received the recognition “with gratitude and humility,” framing it “not as something personal but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility.” He expressed hope that the Grammy win would help amplify his message of compassion and interconnectedness across all people.
