Directed by Suparn Verma, Haq promises to revisit the complex debates surrounding personal law, gender equality, and justice that arose during the Shah Bano case.
According to the film's creators, Haq starts as a love story before turning into a heated discussion about a contentious issue that still needs to be resolved. The movie's courtroom scenes draw attention to more general policy issues, like Article 44 of the Constitution's Uniform Civil Code.
The film is set in 1980s India and revolves around Shazia Bano as she seeks justice when her husband stops child support after remarrying. His attempt to silence her with triple talaq sparks a national debate on women's rights and faith.
The film features an ensemble cast including Yami Gautam as Shazia Bano and Emraan Hashmi as Abbas Khan. The supporting cast features actors such as Sheeba Chaddha, Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, and Rahul Mittra.
The film is based on journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti. The plot explores the emotional and legal journey of Shah Bano, a woman who fought for justice after being divorced by her lawyer husband, Abbas, in 1978.
