Filmmaker Farah Khan is revisiting her 2010 film Tees Maar Khan with a mix of nostalgia and amusement, saying that the comedy — which was heavily criticised at the time of its release — has since been embraced by a younger generation. Over a decade after its theatrical debut, the film has gained a cult following among Gen Z audiences, a shift in perception that Farah finds both surprising and gratifying.
Recently, Farah Khan was joined by YouTuber and The Traitors fame Purav Jha for a conversation, where the filmmaker reflected on how her films are viewed across generations. During the chat, Farah asked him, “Jab Main Hoon Na release hui thi, tab kitne saal ka tha? Shayad 3 saal?" To this, Purav replied, “Haan, itna hi hoga. When Farah asked if he had watched the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, he quickly said, “Haan, ma’am! Kitni baar."
He added, “Arey yaar, kya movie hai.” Farah amusedly said, “Highlight hai yaar. Arey yaar, tum log kahan the jab picture release hui thi? Meri band baja ke rakh di thi sabne."
Earlier Farah also spoke about the film in one of her YouTube vlogs, shot at producer Jackky Bhagnani and actor Rakul Preet Singh’s home. She said, “Tees Maar Khan is a legend with Gen Z. They don’t care for my other films. They think that (Tees Maar Khan) is the one." She further added, “I remember during Tees Maar Khan’s release, there was literally a celebration in the film industry. People whom I have worked with were like, ‘Abhi aayi na line par.’ In our industry, more than being happy for your success, people are happy for other people’s failure."
Tees Maar Khan, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, was widely panned by critics and underperformed at the box office when it was first released.
