“Disrespectful”: Late Karachi SP Chaudhary Aslam Khan's wife criticises his depiction in Dhurandhar, plans to take legal action

Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar has recently hit the theatres with positive reviews and strong box office collections. The film features a semi-fictionalised depiction of India's campaign against terror in Pakistan, namely against the Lyari gangs in Karachi, based on true events.

The film features several characters based on real-life persons, including Sanjay Dutt's late Karachi SP Chaudhary Aslam Khan. However, Aslam's widow, Noreen, has now come forward and shared her thoughts on her husband's depiction in the Ranveer Singh film.

During a recent conversation with the Dialogue Pakistan podcast, Noreen stated that her husband has been a fan of Sanjay Dutt since he saw Khalnayak in the 1990s and that she was confident the actor would capture her husband's essence. Despite this, she admitted that she did have one grievance.

The trailer of the film refers to Aslam as the offspring of the devil and a djinn. Noreen objected to this and said, “We are Muslims, and such words are disrespectful not only to Aslam but his mother, who was a simple, honest woman.”

She explained, “If I see my husband being portrayed wrongly or any propaganda against him in the film, I will definitely take all the legal steps I can. It is strange that Indian filmmakers find no other subjects but to malign Pakistan.”

Who was the late Karachi SP Chaudhary Aslam Khan?

Chaudhary Aslam Khan, who was born in 1963, became an ASI in the Sind Police in the 1980s and served in several places around the province of Pakistan. He was chosen to head the Lyari Task Force during the government's 2000s campaign against gangs in the Karachi township.

Several prominent gangsters in the area are said to have been eliminated by him. The TTP, the Taliban's Pakistani faction, killed him in 2014 after he had survived an attack by the Taliban in 2011.

In the movie Dhurandhar, which is based on Operation Lyari and the Indian intelligence's part in breaking up the terror network there, Sanjay Dutt portrays him.
