Celina Jaitly speaks after court steps in for her brother major Vikrant Jaitly's detention in UAE: "Our soldiers are becoming targets overseas"

Actor and UN Equality Champion Celina Jaitly has approached the Delhi High Court seeking help for her brother, Major (Retd.) Vikrant Kumar Jaitly, who has been detained in the United Arab Emirates since 2024. She has appealed for immediate intervention from Indian authorities to ensure he receives legal and medical assistance, alleging that he has been held without communication and denied proper care.

The Delhi High Court has taken note of the plea and issued a notice to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), directing it to file a status report within four weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for December 4.

The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by Indian nationals, particularly veterans, who encounter legal or diplomatic hurdles abroad.

Speaking emotionally after the hearing, Celina told ANI, “It’s been a nightmare for me, that’s all I will say. I’m very grateful for today’s judgment. Our soldiers, especially overseas, are becoming… as India is rising and becoming bigger and bigger in the international diaspora, our soldiers are becoming targets overseas, over and over again. And I think today’s judgment will really help in bringing him back.”

When asked about her response as a UN Equality Champion and whether she has received any communication from Indian or foreign authorities, Celina replied, “We will get to know. At the moment, it’s best that they speak on my behalf. Let’s wait for the status report.”

Her plea underscores a growing concern about the protection and rights of Indian citizens detained abroad, especially those with a history of military service. The case has evoked sympathy from supporters and netizens, many of whom praised Celina for her composure and persistence in seeking justice for her brother. For now, all eyes are on the MEA’s forthcoming report, which could determine the next steps in securing Major Jaitly’s return.
