When it comes to Bollywood, family legacies often define careers before they even begin. The children of superstars inherit both privilege and pressure. The shadow of comparison looms large.
Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan has faced this scrutiny for years. Yet with the first look of his directorial debut series The Ba***ds of Bollywood now unveiled, Aryan is proving that his path is far from the predictable one many expected.
Director’s chair over spotlight
Unlike many star kids who enter the industry with glamorous launches as actors, Aryan avoided the limelight. Instead, he honed his craft in writing and direction, and co-created his first project with Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan.
Backed by Red Chillies Entertainment, Aryan’s debut is not about cashing in on his father’s name but about building a unique creative voice.
A satirical love letter to Bollywood
Looking at the first reactions, the teaser of The Ba***ds of Bollywood has fairly struck a chord with audiences. Aryan opens with a nostalgic nod to SRK’s iconic Mohabbatein violin sequence before pivoting into satire, as he declares, “Bollywood, jise aapne saalon se pyaar bhi kiya aur vaar bhi kiya… bohot saara pyaar, aur thoda sa vaar.” It’s a bold statement, positioning the series as both homage and roast.
High expectations
The buzz around Aryan’s debut has been huge. Amidst tremendous fan reactions, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos praised the show as “very fun”. Karan Johar called Aryan’s work “record-breaking in the making.” Anil Kapoor even likened the young filmmaker to a modern-day Manmohan Desai.
Such endorsements would be enviable for any first-timer, but for Aryan, they underline both the opportunity and immense pressure attached to his surname, his father's legacy.
Privilege vs Identity
Of course, privilege plays a role. Few newcomers would debut with Netflix backing, a Red Chillies production, and rumoured cameos from SRK, Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, and others. But what distinguishes Aryan is his refusal to take the easiest route. He has chosen storytelling over stardom, craft over glamour.
More than a surname
Aryan Khan’s debut arrives at a time when Bollywood is rethinking its identity in a streaming-dominated era. His project reflects the voice of a generation that grew up consuming cinema but is unafraid to critique it.
While his father continues to reign as one of the world’s biggest stars, Aryan’s journey suggests he isn’t chasing the crown. Instead, he’s crafting his own kingdom, one where his surname is just the starting point, not the whole story.
