Bipasha Basu talks about people reaction when she took up Jism

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu recently talked about how her career was greatly influenced by the 2003 movie Jism.

Bipasha followed her gut, a move that, in retrospect, proved to be a game-changer for her career, even though she was heavily criticised and told not to take on the project because of its daring and mature themes.

In a candid conversation with Times Now, the actress reflected on the resistance she encountered before signing the film. “Jism was the time when I was at the peak, and everyone told me you cannot do adult content film. You are like the typical Hindi heroine who is established in people's hearts now. And I said, I just like the story so much. I said I'll go ahead and do it. Everybody stopped me from doing it. My manager thought I had gone crazy,” she recalled.

Jism, which was directed by Amit Saxena, featured Bipasha and John Abraham, who made his debut. The movie adopted a more sensual, noir style at the time, defying accepted Bollywood conventions.

Despite being regarded as risky, the movie turned out to be a huge box office hit, launching John Abraham's acting career and showcasing Bipasha's versatility as an actress who doesn't hesitate to question the status quo.

Reflecting on the impact the film had on audiences and the industry, Bipasha said, “But it worked for me and then things changed. Women suddenly were tonging their hair. They wore a bronze look. There was no stereotypical (thing) that the woman can't play the negative character. It all changed after that. So it's been path-breaking for me. That has been one very important film.”

After Jism, Bipasha kept up her impressive performances in a variety of genres, but after 2015, she progressively stepped back from films. She most recently starred in the web series Dangerous. But by indicating an interest in investigating long-format storytelling through OTT platforms, she has alluded to a potential return.

In her personal life, Bipasha and her husband Karan Singh Grover became proud parents to their daughter Devi on 12 November 2022. Sharing the joyous news on Instagram, she posted, “12.11.2022. Devi Basu Singh Grover. The physical manifestation of our love and blessings of Ma is here now and she is divine.”
