More than 17 years ago, Namastey London, helmed by the renowned filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah, made an indelible mark on Indian cinema. The film seamlessly blended elements of comedy, drama, and patriotism, and quickly became a global favourite. Yet, one of the most powerful and memorable moments in the film is undoubtedly Akshay Kumar’s iconic monologue, where he passionately extols the greatness of India, with Katrina Kaif providing the English translation.

This scene has since remained a fan favourite, celebrated for its emotion and depth.

However, what many may not know is that, during filming, the attitude of the local British crew shifted dramatically after they heard the facts about India in that very monologue.

In an interview, Vipul Amrutlal Shah shared an intriguing anecdote about how the British crew reacted to Akshay’s impassioned speech.

When Akshay and Katrina first read the script, they were aware of the scene but were promised a more powerful version. Upon seeing the revised scene, they were not only impressed but also confident it would be a major hit. Vipul instructed them to keep the delivery simple, trusting in the strength of the words. The scene was completed in just 2-3 hours, with the sincerity of the performance ensuring its lasting impact.

Vipul recalled his excitement as he watched Akshay Kumar deliver his first major monologue. He observed the British crew's reactions, noticing how many were initially sceptical of the facts about India. Out of the entire crew, only 12-13 members were from India, while the rest were British.

Some British crew members even questioned whether the statements were exaggerated or fictional. But when they realised that every fact presented in the monologue was historically accurate, they were taken aback and impressed.

Now, nearly 18 years later, Namastey London is set to return to theatres on March 14, 2025, rekindling the magic and nostalgia of this beloved rom-com.
