Atlanta rapper DJ Unk, born Anthony Leonard Platt, has passed away at 43. Known for his iconic 2006 hits "Walk It Out" and "2 Step," the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
Fans of hip-hop may recall him performing "Walk It Out" at the 2023 BET Awards, where he joined Soulja Boy and F.L.Y. for a memorable medley.
Multiple family members confirmed the heartbreaking news on Friday. His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, saying, "Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER."
A representative from Platt's former label, Big Oomp Records, where he signed in 2000, also confirmed the tragic news of his passing on social media. "It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk,'” read a statement on the agency's Instagram Stories. “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever."
The statement also highlighted the enduring legacy of his iconic tracks. "Hit songs like 'Walk It Out' and '2 Step' have left an unforgettable imprint on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans for years to come. His energy, creativity, and dedication to the craft will never be forgotten."
Big Oomp concluded, “We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years. Rest in peace, Unk. You will forever be missed.”
Beginning his career in the late 1990s, DJ Unk co-founded Southern Style DJs with DJ Montay and DJ Kelly. As a solo artist, he became a pioneering figure in snap music, a subgenre of crunk that gained mainstream popularity in the mid-2000s, according to Variety. Best known for his hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” Anthony Platt achieved major chart success, with "Walk It Out" reaching No. 2 and "2 Step" hitting No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart.
While the cause of DJ Unk's death has not been disclosed in preliminary reports, it is known that he suffered a heart attack in 2009. Platt had attributed this medical issue to a combination of relentless touring, poor eating habits, and drinking and smoking.
In a 2010 interview with XXL Magazine, DJ Unk openly acknowledged the factors that contributed to his health issues. "It comes from not exercising, from not eating right," he admitted. "Basically, man, I work hard every day. Everything I do, I try to make something happen in my household. I’m constantly on the go, always flying, in different weather, and it just took a toll on me. It was stress."
