Director Payal Kapadia’s poetic drama All We Imagine As Light did not secure an Oscar nomination at the 97th Academy Awards. The film, which was widely anticipated to be a contender in the Best International Feature Film category, failed to make it to the final list.

The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were unveiled on January 23, 2025, showcasing a diverse selection of films and performances from the past year. Among the top five nominees in the Best International Feature Film category are Flow, Emilia Perez, and The Seed of a Sacred Fig.

The highly anticipated announcement was made by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott, who revealed the nominees across multiple categories, celebrating excellence in cinema.

The film has earned Kapadia the prestigious Grand Prix, the festival's second-highest honor. All We Imagine As Light, directed by Payal Kapadia, made waves at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking a historic moment by ending a 30-year drought for Indian films in the official competition section.

Featuring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, All We Imagine As Light delves into the lives of three women employed at a small Mumbai hospital. The film explores the complexities of loneliness and female ambition, earning widespread acclaim as one of the standout films of 2024.

The film has also garnered significant recognition at the EE BAFTA Film Awards with a nomination in the Best Film Not in the English Language category. This marks a notable achievement for Indian cinema.

While Kapadia's film was longlisted in three categories—Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Not in the English Language—it secured only the latter nomination. The film now faces competition from Emilia Perez, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, I'm Still Here, and Kneecap. Unfortunately, Kapadia was not nominated in the Best Director and Best Original Screenplay categories.
