Akon tells Mumbai crowd: 'I am from India' as he ends tour on a high after Bengaluru misconduct incident

Akon wrapped up his India tour with a finale that reminded Mumbai why he has stayed loved across continents for nearly two decades. His November 16 concert wasn’t just about the music. It became a moment of connection, especially coming days after he faced an unpleasant incident during his Bengaluru show.

Mumbai welcomed him like an old friend, and Akon responded in the most Akon way possible: heart first, performance second.

Videos from the evening are everywhere online, but one clip in particular has grabbed attention for all the right reasons.

During a break between songs, he asked the crowd where they were from. Then he smiled, leaned forward, and said, “I am from India.” The arena erupted. He wasn’t done.

“You are all from Africa,” he told the audience, before explaining that, according to human history, all mankind originated from Africa before spreading across continents. “That is why I know I am surrounded by family in this room,” he added. It wasn’t a rehearsed line. It felt like a moment of clarity in the middle of a loud, glittering night.

The Mumbai audience held onto that warmth, but they also got the full Akon experience. In another widely shared video, the singer floats inside a giant bubble, rolling gently above the crowd, waving and laughing like a man completely at ease. At one point, he even splashed water on the audience, turning the packed venue into a carnival. It was messy, joyful, and unmistakably his brand of showmanship.

This was a sharp contrast to what had happened in Bengaluru just days earlier. The singer had performed there over the weekend, and several clips from that show went viral for reasons no performer would want. In one disturbing video, a few people from the VIP section were seen tugging at his pants mid-song. Many online called it bullying. Others described it as harassment. Akon looked uncomfortable, but he didn’t stop. He finished the performance with the same professionalism he’s known for.
