Aamir Khan on his casting choices

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently talked candidly about how he chooses which actors to cast in his films, emphasising that he does not think actors should be given 'breaks'.

Speaking at the Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Summit, he made it clear that creating the greatest movie possible is more important to him than starting careers.

This relates to the film Laapataa Ladies, which he produced and which features young actors Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Pratibha Ranta making their Bollywood debuts.

Aamir emphasised, “I don’t give breaks to people. I want people to understand what I am saying. Main kisiko breaks nahi de raha hu. Main apni film bana raha hu. Aur apni film mein jo sahi hai, wohi rahega. Main usko break nahi de raha hu, wo mere liye kaam kar rahe hain. (I’m not giving anyone a break — I’m making my film. And in my film, only the person who’s right for the role will be there. I’m not giving them a break; they’re working for me).”

He explained that the actors involved were chosen purely on merit and suitability for their roles, not as a favour to help their careers.

Reflecting on the casting process for Laapataa Ladies, Aamir stated, “When we were casting for Laapataa Ladies, and the cast that we did…I am not doing them any favour. Main thodi unka career bana raha hu. Main apni film bana raha hu. Aur woh nbohot suitable hai meri film ke liye. Toh wo meri film mein contribute kar rahe hain. Main unko thank you bolta hu. Main kaunsa break de raha hu unko? (I’m not here to build their careers. I’m making my film, and they are extremely suitable for it. So they are contributing to my film. I thank them for that. What break am I giving them?) I don’t look at it like that. I am not interested in giving anyone breaks. I am only making my films."

Aamir Khan is preparing for the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, his upcoming movie, which was directed by R.S. Prasanna. Fans are excitedly anticipating the latest from one of Bollywood's most renowned actors as the film is scheduled to open in theatres on June 20, 2025.
