Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's film Laapataa Ladies has been sent as India's official entry to Oscars this year. And all eyes are on the movie to make it big at the Academy Awards.
In an interview with BBC News India, Aamir Khan spoke at length about what winning an Oscar for India and that if it comes true then people will go 'ballistic'.
He was asked what would it be like for him to get home as Oscar for India, Aamir Khan said: "I am not quite sure how seriously to take a competition. But I would be really happy. It would create tremendous opportunity for the film to be seen by a lot more people because when a film wins an Oscar or Academy award, then people from around the world want to see what it’s like. So it opens a huge window of opportunity for a larger audience for a film."
Aamir further added that Indians are dying to win an Oscars for any Indian Film. "More important than that, I think Indian are so film crazy and we have been dying to win an Academy Award for an Indian film which hasn’t happened till now. So the country would go ballistic. They’ll just go mad if we win. So just for the people of our country, I’d be very happy if we win the award."
In the past only three Indian films Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan have been nominated in the International Feature category; but none of them have won Oscars.
Telugu film RRR directed by SS Rajamouli won the Best Original Song and Elephant Whisperers won the Best Documentary Short. Now, the audience has high expectations from Laapataa Ladies.
Oscars 2025 nominations will be announced on December 17.
On the work front, Aamir Khan will be soon seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which is the sequel to his film Taare Zameen Par and also stars Darsheel Safary and Genelia Deshmukh.
The film is scheduled to release in 2025. He is also producing good friend Rajkumar Santoshi's directorial, Lahore 1947 starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta.
