In a rare move that defies prevailing industry practices, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently revealed his decision to turn down a Rs 125 crore OTT subscription deal for his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par. In an exclusive interview with Business Today, the actor-producer spoke about the bold choice, stressing the value he places on audience feedback over upfront monetary gains.

“We did not sell the subscription model before the release. That was a tough and big decision,” Aamir said. “We didn’t have any safety net. But I believe it is the audience that decides how much they love the film.” The actor noted that the film has crossed Rs 250 crore in global box office earnings, reinforcing his faith in traditional theatrical releases and word-of-mouth marketing.

Aamir Khan admitted that rejecting the lucrative OTT deal wasn’t easy. “I was given a lot of advice against what I was doing. But I strongly felt that model is not good for me in the long run, creatively or from a business perspective,” he said. The actor emphasized that audience trust and genuine reactions hold greater value to him than guaranteed revenue. “Rather than the Rs 125 crores of a pre-sale, I would rather take Rs 100 from each audience member. That is more valuable to me.”

At 60, Aamir Khan continues to challenge the conventional pathways of commercial cinema. He further revealed that he plans to use digital platforms to support young, independent filmmakers—many of whom struggle to secure theatrical releases. His aim is to create space for diverse voices that often remain unheard in mainstream cinema.

Sitaare Zameen Par, which hit theatres on June 20, 2025, is directed by RS Prasanna, known for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. The screenplay is penned by Divy Nidhi Sharma, and the film is a Hindi adaptation of the 2018 Spanish sports drama Campeones. The project is co-produced by Khan along with Aparna Purohit, B Shrinivas Rao, and Ravi Bhagchandka.
