Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has added another first to his long list of creative milestones, stepping into the world of immersive cinema with a dome presentation of his film Le Musk in Vancouver. The showcase marked Rahman as the first Indian artist to present an immersive film in the Dome format, underlining his growing interest in storytelling that moves beyond conventional screens and soundtracks.
The gala screening of Le Musk in Vancouver drew a strong response, with two shows selling out and audiences responding enthusiastically to the experience. Adapted specifically for the Dome’s 360-degree viewing environment, the film surrounds viewers with images and sound, turning the act of watching into something closer to inhabiting the story. For Rahman, the project represents not just a technical experiment, but a deliberate shift toward experiential cinema.
Le Musk is an English-language immersive film and also marks Rahman’s directorial debut. The project first gained international attention at the Cannes XR Forum, where it was introduced as part of the festival’s extended reality programming. Since then, it has travelled to several global cities, including Singapore, Toronto, and Los Angeles, steadily building curiosity for its unusual blend of technology and sensory design.
What sets Le Musk apart from most immersive films is its use of scent as a narrative device. Designed as a multi-sensory experience, the film integrates fragrance into the storytelling itself. Smell becomes more than an added novelty; it functions as an emotional cue, guiding the audience through memory, mood, and meaning. By combining sight, sound, and scent, Rahman expands the grammar of cinema into territory more often associated with live installations or performance art.

Speaking about the project and its Vancouver presentation, Rahman described Le Musk as a passion project rooted in curiosity and experimentation. He explained that the film is about exploring new forms of storytelling and sharing narrative traditions with a wider global audience. The dome format, he noted, opens up possibilities that excite him creatively, particularly in how stories can be felt rather than simply watched.
With its successful Vancouver Dome showcase, Le Musk continues its journey across international immersive platforms. The project reinforces Rahman’s ongoing effort to blur boundaries between music, cinema, and technology, pointing toward a future where storytelling engages not just the eyes and ears, but the entire human sensorium.
