Ricky Kej and Anoushka Shankar have made India proud with their nominations for the 67th Grammy Awards. Kej, already a three-time Grammy winner, has received his fourth nod for Break of Dawn in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category.
The category, which highlights albums comprising over 75% new age vocal or instrumental tracks, also features sitar virtuoso and composer Anoushka Shankar’s Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn, as revealed by the Recording Academy on Friday.
Joining Ricky Kej and Anoushka Shankar in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category are Warriors of Light by Radhika Vekaria and Triveni, a collaborative effort by entrepreneur-musician Chandrika Tandon, flautist Wouter Kellerman, and cellist Eru Matsumoto. Shankar has also garnered another nomination for her featured performance on Jacob Collier's track A Rock Somewhere, which includes vocalist Varijashree Venugopal, marking her first Grammy nod.
The track A Rock Somewhere is nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category, which recognizes outstanding new vocal or instrumental Global music recordings. Ricky Kej’s Grammy journey began in 2015 with a win for Winds of Samsara in the Best New Age Album category. He later secured two more Grammys for Divine Tides, his collaboration with Stewart Copeland, winning Best New Age Album in 2022 and Best Immersive Audio Album in 2023.
Singer-flautist Venugopal told PTI that it was a "fantastic experience to sing and to melt into the sonic space of this song". "Today has been a great day to find out that this song has received an immense recognition of a Grammy nomination. Acknowledgements like these, empower independent artists, energising them to creatively flow and fly beyond boundaries and borders. My hearty congratulations to all the fellow nominees."
The 2025 Grammy Awards are set to be held on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
