The Hisar Lok Sabha seat in Haryana comprises nine Assembly segments and has traditionally been dominated by the Bhajan Lal and Devi Lal families. The seats will go to polls on May 25, in the sixth phase of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, along with the rest of the state.
This year, the Chautala dynasty is at the forefront, with three family members contesting against each other.
In an unexpected twist, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Brijendra Singh resigned from the party and joined the Congress, citing an alliance between the BJP and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) as a key reason for his departure.
The Congress has now fielded former Hisar MP Jai Prakash for the upcoming contest. Jai Prakash is a three-time MP from Hisar and also served as a Union Minister in Chandra Shekhar's cabinet in 1990.
Meanwhile, the BJP has fielded Ranjit Singh Chautala, who previously won as an independent Member of Legislative Assembly. At 78, Ranjit Singh Chautala serves as a minister in the BJP-led Haryana government. He is the son of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal and the brother of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala.
The JJP has put forward Naina Singh Chautala, JJP co-founder and former Haryana deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala's mother and a two-time MLA. Known for her 'Hari Chunari Chaupal' initiative, Naina Singh Chautala aims to raise political awareness among women across the state.
INLD has fielded Sunaina Chautala, the wife of Devi Lal's grandson Ravi Chautala.
Historically, the Congress has won the seat seven times from 1952 to 2009, while the BJP clinched victory for the first time in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. JJP co-founder and former Haryana deputy CM Dushyant Chautala won the seat in 2014 when he was in INLD.
