The ultimate success of any political strategy lies in its ability to capture the public mood and thereby secure an electoral victory. In employing such a strategy, political outfits, over the years have changed multiple aspects of electioneering to get the desired outcome.

A preliminary reading of Trinamool Congress' (TMC) list of 291 candidates, released by party chief Mamata Banerjee, reinforces a trend, which the party has positively employed over the years. Dubbed as a bipolar contest -- the TMC is fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party, an outfit that has steadily increased its base in Bengal. BJP's 2021 tally --- 77 out of 294 seats, marks a high point in Party's mission Bengal.

As political narratives begin to consolidate leading up to voting day, TMC and BJP are banking on their strengths that have yielded electoral dividend in the past.

TMC packs a punch

The TMC on Tuesday named 291 candidates for 291 of West Bengal's 2894 seats, signalling a push to counter anti-incumbency, reinforce its social coalition, and field a surprise pick in Nandigram. One trend that stands out in TMC's list is the overwhelming dominance of 'star power'. The TMC chief views stardom as the ultimate equaliser as it takes on BJP strategy, which brilliantly combines organizational depth with technological prowess.

In the all-important battle against the BJP, which leverages its vast network of grassroots “panna pramukhs" and tech-driven organisational machinery, the TMC the TMC is going aggressively on its “Tollywood strategy".

By fielding a diverse array of actors, singers, sportspersons, and cultural icons, the West Bengal Chief Minister is not merely seeking glamour; she is deploying a complex tactical tool designed to neutralize traditional political boundaries.

One of the most plausible reasons for the big bet on celebrities is the need to neutralise “local-level anti-incumbency". Over a long tenure in power, sitting MLAs often accumulate grievances related to local administration or factional infighting within the party. By replacing a traditional politician with a fresh, popular face from the film or music industry or sporting arena, the TMC effectively resets the narrative in that constituency.

Behind TMC's effort to weaponize ideology

For TMC, Beyond the usual electioneering, there is a deeper ideological play at work. Mamata Banerjee has consistently positioned the TMC as the sole custodian of “Bengali Identity" and culture, contrasting it with what she describes as the “outsider" culture of the BJP. By filling her candidate list with the icons of Bengali cinema, literature, and sports, she reinforces the idea that the TMC is the natural home for the state’s intellectual and cultural elite.

Understanding BJP's Bengal playbook

Immediately after its victory in Bihar, the saffron party had started working on a strategy to break through the defensive lines of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress. The party is focusing on strengthening its organisation. Of the 91,000 booths in Bengal, the BJP has already formed booth committees in approximately 70,000 booths. A win in Bengal will be a massive morale booster for the BJP. Home Minister Amit Shah, in no uncertain terms said the BJP's rise will come when it elects its own chief minister in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

The BJP seeks to project a vision of a peaceful, development-oriented West Bengal free from corruption. Shah has repeatedly advised state leaders on countering Mamata Banerjee's claims regarding land acquisition and the BSF's role.

He argued that border management issues persist because the state government has failed to provide land. On development, he stated that while the Union government is willing to provide funds, the state government has failed to utilise them properly due to corruption.
