Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has been elected as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
Yadav, who once again won from the Raghopur constituency, has taken charge as LoP for the second time after the Mahagathbandhan’s poor performance in the recent Assembly election, where the alliance secured only 35 seats, including 25 won by the RJD.
The decision to name Tejashwi as LoP comes at a time when the RJD is facing internal turbulence. His sister, Rohini Acharya, has accused him of humiliating her and “throwing her out of the house.” Speaking to reporters, she alleged that family members, including Tejashwi, mistreated her.
In an emotional post on X, Rohini claimed she was “humiliated,” “abused,” and even threatened. She wrote that she refused to compromise on her self-respect and was eventually forced to leave her parental home.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan ahead of the formation of the new Assembly. Kumar, the JD(U) chief, is expected to take oath as Chief Minister for the 10th time.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Nitish Kumar, registered a sweeping victory in the polls, winning 202 of the 243 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, followed by JD(U) with 85. Other NDA allies, including LJP (RV), HAM (S), and RLM, secured 19, 5, and 4 seats respectively.
Among other parties, the IIP won 1 seat and AIMIM secured 5 seats. The Mahagathbandhan managed 35 seats, with the Congress winning 6, CPI(ML)(L) 2, and CPI(M) 1.
Political analysts attribute the NDA’s victory partly to Nitish Kumar’s welfare initiatives, including the Mahila Rozgar Yojana, which provided Rs 10,000 each to 1.25 crore women. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the mandate a win for development and good governance.
