Schools and colleges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will get an extended break this year for the Dussehra festival, which will be celebrated on Thursday, 2 October 2025. The holiday calendar released by the state education departments confirms that most institutions will remain closed for at least nine days, with some regions observing an even longer vacation.
According to the schedule, schools and colleges in both states will have holidays from 24 September to 2 October 2025. However, Christian minority institutions will follow a shorter six day break, from 27 September to 2 October.
Extended holidays in TelanganaIn Telangana, the festival break will last longer than in Andhra Pradesh. Schools and colleges across the state will remain closed from 21 September to 3 October, giving students a 13 day holiday. Additionally, the Telangana government has announced a holiday on 5 September to observe Urs-un-Nabi, marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most important Hindu festivals. It is observed on the tenth day of the Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar and marks the victory of good over evil, symbolised by Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana. This year, the festival falls on 2 October 2025.
