Tamil Nadu Schools May Delay Reopening Amid Heatwave

With summer vacation drawing to a close, schools in Tamil Nadu are currently scheduled to reopen on June 2, as per the state's academic calendar. However, an ongoing heatwave across several parts of the state has prompted discussions about a possible extension of the holidays.

The summer break for most students began on April 25, shortly after the conclusion of annual exams. While the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has not made any official changes to the reopening schedule, concerns over rising temperatures have put the planned reopening date under review. If the heatwave intensifies, the government will likely take appropriate steps in the best interest of students.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an early onset of the southwest monsoon, predicting it to hit Kerala by May 27, ahead of the usual June 1 arrival. This development could bring relief from the soaring temperatures in Tamil Nadu, particularly in coastal regions like Chennai, which tend to receive monsoon showers soon after Kerala.

While an early monsoon may reduce the chances of extending summer vacation due to heat, the possibility of weather-related school closures due to heavy rainfall cannot be ruled out.

A final decision on the reopening of schools is expected by the end of May, after reviewing inputs from both the weather department and the Climate Management Committee.
