The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools in Chennai and several districts following heavy rainfall that inundated large parts of the state. The continuous downpour, which began on Wednesday night, has caused severe waterlogging, disrupted daily life, and raised safety concerns for students.

Districts Affected by School Closures

Schools remained closed in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore. Authorities made the decision to prioritize the safety of students and staff as many roads in these districts were submerged, making travel hazardous.

The announcement followed overnight rains that caused widespread flooding in residential areas and major arterial roads. The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has urged parents and students to stay updated on further announcements as more rain is expected in the coming days.

Challenges Faced by Students and Residents

In Chennai, waterlogging in key areas such as Velachery, Vyasarpadi, and Pallavaram disrupted daily life. Parents expressed concerns about commuting under such conditions, prompting the closure of schools as a precaution. Traffic came to a standstill in multiple locations, including Kathipara, Porur, and Maduravoyal, further complicating the situation.

In rural areas like Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam, the rain has severely impacted agricultural activities, with submerged fields adding to the distress of local communities.

Government Measures and Weather Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, with coastal and interior districts likely to experience more downpours. A well-marked low-pressure system in Mannar Bay is expected to weaken, but authorities remain on alert as another weather system may develop in the Andaman Sea by December 15.

To ensure public safety, the government has deployed disaster response teams in vulnerable areas and advised residents in low-lying regions to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast more rain in Chennai and neighboring districts, prompting concerns of extended school closures if conditions do not improve.

The education department is monitoring the situation and will issue further directives as necessary, prioritizing student safety during this period of extreme weather.
